Aug 03,  · I have a box set of Sibelius' complete symphonies by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Paavo Bergland. This is the first Sibelius collection I bought and I have enjoyed it for years and been happy with the recordings. However I now want to dig a bit deeper and get some other recordings of the individual symphonies. Reply

This performance is so intense one forgets about the mono sound and just hangs on for the ride. The second movement of the Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 "Tempo: Andante ma rubato" is beautifully paced, with the pizzicato basses and scant, sustained chords combining in a palpable aura of mystery.
